Declaring that the delay in the implementation of the law for the immigration of displaced persons to the United States has disrupted the movement of DP’s from Europe to this country, Samuel A. Telsey, president of HIAS, today announced that his organization has allocated an additional $750,000 to intensify the immigration of displaced Jews to South America, Australia and other immigrant-receiving countries.
Telsey also revealed that HIAS is chartering planes to carry displaced Jews from Europe direct to other countries. HIAS has also arranged sanctuary for Jewish orphans who will be brought from Germany to Amsterdam, where they will be trained in ceramics and will eventually become citizens of the Netherlands, he stated.
Isaac L. Asofsky, HIAS executive director, today reported that the delay in setting up the Displaced Persons Commission has meant the suspension of issuance of U.S. visas in Europe since June 30. “No persons have moved out of the D.P. camps since that time, and the some 1,500 displaced persons in the U.S. zone of Germany, who have been fully processed by the American Consulates and voluntary agencies such as HIAS, and had expected to go to the U.S. in July, still remain in the camps with the prospect of waiting many more months or years before they can reach their goal,” he said.
