An auto highway from Metula, northernmost point of Palestine, running all the way to the Gulf of Aqaba, a distance of more than 250 miles, is being planned by the Israeli Government, Mordecai Bentov, Minister of Labor, stated today.
A second plan on which Israeli engineers are working is the construction of an underground railway extending from Tel Aviv to Haifa, a distance of about 50 miles, the Cabinet member said. This will reduce traveling time between the two cities from two hours to 45 minutes. He also said that extensive Jewish colonization was expected along both Palestine routes.
Bentov stated that his ministry expected a total of 3,000,000 Jewish immigrants within ten years and that all future settlement projects would be based on that figure. He asserted that at least 250,000 Jews must be expected within two years and that they would need 80,000 dwellings, costing an estimated $200,000,000. This construction program would give employment to 20,000 workers.
