The Jewish, press today reported that there are many Jews residing in Argentina who can never become citizens because of a recent change in judicial procedure in the granting of citizenship status.
These Jews have no birth certificates or other official documents from their native lands because they either fled as refugees or lost their documents since leaving Europe. The present governments are either unable or unwilling to supply duplicates. Previously, Argentine judges merely required two witnesses to testify ?so the identity of the petitioner for citizenship, but recently the judges have refused to accept such testimony and demand a birth certificate as proof of identity and former nationality.
