The sum of $6,500,000 has been spent in the United States and Canada by a special Israeli mission which arrived in this country six weeks ago to purchase food and machinery for Israel, it was reported here today.
The report was made by A. Beker and J. Jacobson, the members of the mission, at a send-off luncheon tendered them on the occasion of their return to Israel. More than $2,500,000 was spent for food, about $2,000,000 for autos, trucks and accessories, and the remainder on clothing and other commodities, Beker revealed.
Henry Morgenthau, Jr., who was one of the principal speakers at the gathering, assured the delegation, that American Jews will do their utmost to help the Jews of Israel. Other speakers included Israeli Consul Arthur Lourie, and leaders of the clotting trade unions whose members have volunteered to work without pay to manufacture clothing for Israel.
A campaign to “give a kit to every soldier in Israel” has been launched today by “Kits for the Army of Israel,” a new project which is sponsored by “Material for Palestine.” Each kit, which costs $10, will contain underwear, toilet articles, a cigarette lighter and other small essentials. It will also contain a letter from the individual donor to the Israeli soldier receiving this much needed package. The sponsors feel that letters are as important for morale purposes as are the necessary items of clothing and other articles.
