With the DP camps in Italy emptying at a rate that expected to clear all displaced Jews out of the country within a short time, the international Refugee Organization staff has proposed to Jewish institutions that they bring to Italy some 6,000 to 8,000 DP’s from either Germany or Austria, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned today.
The JTA also learned that the Italian Foreign Ministry is prepared to approve such a plan, providing that it receives guarantees that the refugees will not remain in the country, but will leave for Israel after remaining a short time.
In view of the growing anti-Semitism in Germany and Austria, the Jewish institutions here view the I.R.O. proposal favorably. However, the Joint Distribution committee and the Jewish Refugee Organization here are planning to reduce their administrative staffs by 50 percent.
