An urgent meeting of the U.N. Security Council has been called for tomorrow “morning immediately after the U.N. headquarters here received the news of the assassination of Count Bernadette and Col. Serot.
U.N. Secretary General Trygve Lie, who is now in Oslo, cancelled all schedule plans and is returning tomorrow to Paris. Meanwhile, Acting Secretary General Arkadi Sobelev directed Ralph Bunche, senior U.N. official in Palestine, to remain in the area and assume full authority over the U.N. mediation mission.
Gen. Aago Lundstroom, chief of the U.N. military mission in Palestine, has been directed by Sobelev to start immediately an investigation into the nature of the assassination. U.N. officials abstained from making any comment, emphasizing that they are awaiting further news about the identity of the assassin and the circumstances of Bernadette’s death.
