Maximum community support for the Jewish Center movement was urged this week-end at the Jewish Center Division Committee’s annual two-day meeting at the Hotel Commodore. The appeal for full community support of Jewish Centers was voiced by Frank L. Weil, president of the Jewish Welfare Board, sponsor of the Center Communities, who emphasized that “in these decisive times the Jewish Center has a vital role to play in its service to the total community.” The Jewish Centers by their efforts to “enrich with significant Jewish content the community’s cultural resources” are making giant strides toward achieving a “more meaningful and positive Jewish life in America,” he declared. Weil denounced the assassination of Count Folke Bernadotte as an “utterly insensate and brutal murder. It makes no difference who committed the crime. It is harmful to the cause of international peace.”
Reporting on the Center Committee’s activities last year, Philip Klutznick, its chairman, stated that 1,750 organizations in 47 states commemorated Jewish Book Month, that the Jewish Music Festival attracted interest and participation in and beyond America and that the Center Division’s publications department distributed over 26,000 items of literature. S.D. Gershovits, J.W.B. executive director, disclosed that some $3,000,000 worth of construction was begun this year by various Jewish centers.
