Reconstruction for Jews remaining in Europe and accelerated immigration for those who must leave were the twin programs outlined for the Joint Distribution Committee in the next year by Edward M.M. Warburg, chairman, and Moses. A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman, speaking at the agency’s Western States Regional Conference held here last night.
Warburg announced to the delegates representing communities in California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Idaho that the J.D.C. plans to move 10,000 displaced Jews a month to Israel, “We hope that by the end of the year the bulk of displaced persons in Italy and Austria will be evacuated, and that by the end of 1949, the numbers still remaining in the American zone of Germany will be considerable reduced,” he stated. Leavitt discussed the reconstruction program already carried out in Europe and called for additional support “to finish the job.”
Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel, prominent San Francisco attorney, was elected chairman of the region. Max H. Block, of Seattle, was named secretary, and M.F. Berg, of Los Angeles, chairman of the executive committee.
