Foreign Minister Moshe Shertok today presented a two-hour report of the, political situation at a closed session of the 37-meaber State Council. The Foreign Minister, who is expected to leave immediately for the U.N. General Assembly in Paris, outlined Israel’s objectives there.
Zorah Wehrhaftig, chairman of the Constitution Committee of the State Council, revealed today that his committee favors the establishment of a parliamentary body which will consist of one chamber with 101 representatives. The Council’s election committee, on the other hand, is known to support a 171-member legislative body The State Council will have to decide between the two plans.
Although there are at present four different drafts of the proposed Israel Constitution before the Council, the draft submitted by Dr. Leo Kohn, of the Foreign Office, is considered most likely to be approved.
The Agudas Israel today urged the Israeli Government to grant the right of immigration to every Jew residing in the Diaspora. At a meeting with Foreign Minister Moshe Shertok, an Agudah delegation pointed out that between 15 to 20 percent of all Jews living in European DP camps are members of the Agudah.
The deputation told the Foreign Minister that during the past 20 years, members of the Agudah wishing to enter Palestine have been subjected to a virtually restrictive quota. The delegation also urged Shertok to appoint minority party members to overseas posts, Shertok promised the delegation that the government will extend equal rights to all and will place equal obligations upon all citizens of the state.
