Prompt and determined action by Jewish officials in the British zone of Germany blocked an attempt by local German officials to take over control of the Glyn Hughes Hospital for Jews here, it was reported today.
When the Germans made representations to the British officials for control of the hospital, Dr. Joseph Rosensaft, chairman of the Jewish Central Committee of the zone; Sam Dollob, Joint Distribution Committee field director for the zone, and Dr Sascha Gottlieb, chief physician at the hospital, met with British occupation authorities and refused to surrender responsibility for the institution, the only hospital for Jews in the entire zone. The British finally agreed to leave the hospital in the hands of the Jews.
Other problems discussed at the conference included the legal status of Jewish DP’s held in the Kaunitz prison which was recently transferred to the Jurisdiction of the German authorities. The Jews also asked that provision be made for adequate fuel supplies for displaced Jews this winter and that conditions at the Falingbostel camp, a transient camp for Jews awaiting the opportunity to emigrate from Germany, be improved.
