NEW YORK (Oct. 1)
President Enrique Hertzog of Bolivia today informed Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president of the World Jewish Congress, that the Bolivian Government has revoked a decree which threatened the livelihood of many Jews now resident in that country.
The measure, which was directed against “Semitic” immigrants who arrived in Bolivia since 1937, authorized a special investigation of their financial assets. Dr. Wise, in a cable to the Bolivian President charged that the Bolivian Chamber of Commerce and the Banco Centrals were denying import licenses and facilities to Jews on the basis of the discriminatory decree. The reply received by him today from President Hertzog said: “The Government of Bolivia, in consideration for the reasons given in your cable, revokes the decree in question.”
