Italian Jews to Launch Drive for Funds to Maintain 500 Orphans in Rome Institutions

SIGN UP FOR THE JTA DAILY BRIEFING

A special fund-raising campaign for some 500 Jewish orphans maintained in institutions in Rome will be launched here soon, it was revealed today. Arie Stern, Israeli representative in Italy, will serve on the sponsors committee.

In the past the orphanages were maintained by the Joint Distribution Committee, which was responsible for half the costs of the institutions, and the Union of Jewish Communities of Italy, which was responsible for the other half. However, since the Union rarely managed to meet its financial obligations, the institutions were not able to provide complete and adequate services. In the face of this situation, the J.D.C. proposed a special campaign among Italian Jews to pay for the expenses of the orphanages and to make the local Jewish community understand fully its obligations.
