A nation-wide drive to raise $1,500,000 during the next six months to erect a Polio Institute in Palestine was launched here yesterday by the Histadruth. Opening of the campaign was made known by Dr. Joseph Mayer, chief medical officer of the Israeli Army, who is now in this country.
Pointing out that there is not at present a single polio hospital in the entire Middle East, Dr. Mayer said the purpose of the drive was to set up a hospital which would serve the residents of the Middle East on a non-sectarian basis. The C.I.O. has already pledged $150,000 to the drive for the erection of a wing in honor of Philip Murray, its president, while a similar amount has been contributed by a group of individuals.
Meanwhile, it was revealed here today that employees of several hat-manufacturing firms in this area are working at an accelerated pace to provide 100,000 caps to the Israeli Army. The workers are contributing their labor free of charge while employers have donated the use of their factories as will as material.
