The success of the 1948 United Jewish Appeal campaign hinges on the results that will be achieved in the more than 1,000 communities currently engaged in fall drives for the $250,000,000 nationwide effort, general chairman Henry Morgenthau, Jr., stated today in a telephone conference which was heard simultaneously at gatherings of community leaders in key cities in various parts of the country.
Declaring that if the fall communities “do as well as the spring communities, we will have a result that will be a credit to American Jewry, “Mr. Morgenthau suggested that the following steps be taken immediately: 1. Maximum cash remittances should be forwarded to U.J.A. headquarters to meet the immediate requirements of the U.J.A. agencies; 2. Communities that have completed their campaigns should act quickly to make their allotments to U.J.A.; 3. Local leaders should complete payments on their pledges as soon as possible “to encourage their communities to speed the flow of cash that will deliver many Jews from exile into freedom.”
Joining with Mr. Morgenthau in his appeal for intensive campaign and collection effort were former Governor Herbert H. Lehman, honorary chairman of the U.J.A. ‘s Collection Drive; Rabbi Israel Goldstein and Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, national chairmen of the United Jewish Appeal; Edwin Rosenberg, president of the United Service for Now Americans; and Capt. Alexander Albala, a member of the Israeli Youth Mission.
