Henry Morgenthau, Jr., former Secretary of the Treasury and general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, will fly to Israel tomorrow to make an on-the-spot survey of how the funds contributed in the United States are being spent for large-scale immigration from the D.P. centers and other parts of Europe and the needs of Israel in providing for the absorption of more than 100,000 newcomers a year.
In what will be his first visit to the Jewish state, Mr. Morgenthau will discuss with experts in immigration, agriculture and industry the requirements for 1949 and the financial support that will be required through the United Jewish Appeal. He will also confer with President Chaim Weizmann, Premior David Ben Gurion and other members of the Israeli Government.
In the course of his visit to the Jewish state, he will tour various parts of the country, particularly these areas where new rural settlements and towns are being set up to speed the absorption of newly-arrived refugees. Mr. Morgenthau is also expected to visit the Negev, the southern desert area in Palestine which the Jews of Israel plan to reclaim for the ultimate settlement of from 300,000 to 400,000 persons.
