NEW YORK (Oct. 31)
The Israelis cannot risk permitting Jerusalem to become the “subject of international control” because the “inability of the United Nations to protect Jerusalem is too apparent,” Eliahu Epstein, head of the Israel mission in this country, declared during the week-end at a special ceremony at the B’nai Jeshurun Synagogue at which Dr. Israel Goldstein was honored for his thirtieth year of service with the congregation. Epstein added that the Jews cannot “abandon Jerusalem” in a “sea of Arabs” who have “battered it without halt through the period of the truce.”
Addressing the gathering, which was also bidding him farewell prior to his sailing to Jerusalem to take up his new duties as treasurer of the Jewish Agency, Dr. Goldstein said that “there is a markedly greater measure of unity in American Jewry than existed thirty years ago”, attributing this in part to the merging of virtually all Jewry in the movement to establish a Jewish state. “The prestige of Jews everywhere has risen as a result of the establishment of Israel and a solution to the problem of Jewish national homelessness is at last a realistic prospect”, he declared. Among the many messages of congratulations received by Dr. Goldstein was one from Presidential candidate Gov. Thomas E. Dewey.
