The entire coastal strip adjoining the Negev north of Gaza is now in Israeli hands, following the withdrawal of Egyptian troops from the Majdal pocket, northeast of Gaza, last night and today.
The Egyptians retreated along the beach without molestation from the Israelis who dominated it with artillery. It is estimated that some 3,000 Arab troops were involved in the retreat. The Jews immediately marched into the entire Majdal area, including tint city, Barbara and Hirbiya.
At Yed Mordeclai the Egyptian flag was lowered and the Israeli banner hoisted, marking the reoccupation of two of three settlements captured by the invading Egyptian forces months ago. The settlement was founded in 1943 in honor of Mordechai Anilevitz, hero of the Warsaw ghetto battle. Nizzanim, another of the settlements, has already been freed, but Klar Darom is still in Arab hands.
