James G. MacDonald, special U.S. representative to Israel, and Duncan Griffiths, Ambassador to Egypt, are expected here shortly en route to Washington for full discussions on the Palestine case, it was reported here today in circles close to the American delegation. At the same time, it was made known that Lewis Douglas, U.S. Ambassador to Britain, discussed Palestine yesterday with Secretary of State George C. Marshall.
These round-robin consultations on the eve of an American statement in the Political Committee on the Bernadotte recommendations are taken here to indicate the shaping of a possibly revised American policy based on the widest consultations with the Jews, Arabs and British. While in Paris, MacDonald and Griffiths will consult with Marshall and are expected to comment on the Arab refugee situation. An American source was careful to point out, however, that the consultations will not be limited to the refugee problem.
Commenting on Dr. Philip C. Jessup’s remarks to the Security Council yesterday in support of the Canadian armistice resolution, American delegation sources admitted the link between the armistice and the political settlement which the Political Committee is endeavoring to secure. But they insisted that an armistice in no way prejudices a final political decision.
