The Board of Deputies of British Jews decided today to reconvene the standing committee of legal experts that was set up in 1945 to advise it on legislation concerning the defamation of Jewish communities. The committee was empowered to coopt new members and, after consultation with the Board’s defense committee, and consider steps to protect the Jews in Britain against vilification.
The decision to reconvene its legal experts committee was taken by the Board after a governmental body rejected a recommendation calling for the passage of legislation which would ban group defamation. In view of the widespread calumniation of Jews in Britain, Morton Reuben, chairman of the law and parliamentary committee stated, “it is an understatement to say that British Jews are disappointed by the decision of the government body.
