A coalition in the United Nations consisting of China, Syria, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Canada held up immediate consideration of Israel’s application for admission to the U.N., which has been consistently supported by the United States. The Security Council membership committee which was considering the application tonight adjourned until after the Political Committee reports to the General Assembly on Palestine.
During the debate, Britain and China joined in demanding that prior solution of the whole Palestine problem be found before the membership committee of the Security Council acts on the Israeli application. Francs and China favored adjournment until the Political Committee of the General Assembly reaches its final stage of work on the Palestine issue.
France added a proviso that a decision should also he reached first by the General Assembly. John C. Ross for the United States said he would defer to the desire for postponement if the committee would be reconvened by the chairman a half day or a day after the Political Committee’s final decision.
Valentine Lawford of the United Kingdom suggested that the sub-committee report back to the Security Council without recommending a decision on Israel’s application and that the Council should do the rest after the Political Committee finished its work.
It is evident that the United States delegation, which alone pressed for consideration today, needs more time to persuade the wavering delegations of France, Canada and Belgium to vote in favor of Israel’s prompt admission. Approaches had been made to all three countries at the highest Levels in the last 24 hours.
