Lord Melchett, British industrialist who embraced the Jewish faith and became a prominent leader in the Zionist movement, died here yesterday, as the age of 50. He was in poor health for some time.
Henry Ludwig Mond, second Baron Melchett of Lendford, formally adopted the Jewish faith in 1933, during Hitler’s early persecution of the Jews. He became the principal organizer in Britain of a boycott against Germany in retaliation for the oppression of the Jews. He had been for several years during the 1930’s, chairman of the council of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, and was president of Maccabean organization.
He was a distinguished industrialist, a leader in the chemical field, and a financier, He also was the author of the widely published book “Thy Neighbor” which strongly pressed the case for a Jewish national home, and of several books on banking. He is survived by his sister, the Marchioness of Reading, noted British Zionist leader.
