Thousands of South African Jews today crowded the docks of this port to greet the Castle Bianca, a vessel which is carrying some 900 refugee Jews from Shanghai to Israel. Some of the South African Jews flew here from Johannesburg to greet relatives and friends on the ship.
The passengers were visibly touched by the warm reception accorded them by the local Jews, and expressed the hope that they would be as well received in the Jewish state. The crowds on the docks cheered as supplies of all sorts which they had brought for the refugees were carried aboard the ship. This is the second transport of Shanghai evacuees to pass Capetown this week; the Wooster Victory, which was also given a warm welcome, stopped over several days ago.
