1949 U.J.A. Drive to Be Launched Formally at Emergency Parley in Washington March 10

The 1949 campaign of the United Jewish Appeal will be launched formally at an Emergency National Conference of the U.J.A. which will be held in Washington on March 19 and 20, Henry Morgenthau, Jr., general chairman, announced here this week-end. Some 1,200 Jewish leaders from all parts of the country are expected to attend the Washington parley.

Tomorrow, Morgenthau revealed, Isadora of the U.J.A., Jewish Agency, United Palestine Appeal and United Service for Hew Americana will join in an extraordinary conference by telephone with some 15,000 persons in 150 communities from coast to coast. The mass conferences will signal the start of community drives in behalf of the U.J.A. in the 150 cities and will be on a national hook-up.

Morgenthau announced the appointment of the following national officers of the U.J.A.: Harold J. Goldenberg, Minneapolis, chairman of the National Campaign Cabinet, over-all planning body for the U.J.A. drive; Samuel Rothberg, of Peoria, chairman for Initial Gifts; Mrs. David M. Levy, of New York, honorary chairman of the National Women’s Division and Mrs. Ernest G. Wadel, of Dallas, chairman of the women’s Division; Herman Gilman of Boston, chairman of the Rational Trades and Industries Division; Julian B. Venezky, of Peoria, chairman, and E.N. Grueskin, of Sioux City, Eugene M. Solow, of Dallas, Charles Brown, of Los Angeles, and Milton Kahn, of Boston, co-chairmen of the regional division. Morris W. Berinstein, of Syracuse, will be chairman of the National Caravans; Abraham Feinberg of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., chairman of the Metropolitan Division and I. Edwin Goldwasser and Jacob Sin off both of New York, national co-treasurers. Henry Montor la director of the drive.

A special drive for funds to build 50,000 homes in Israel for refugee immigrants was launched here today at a meeting of the Council of Organizations of the New York U.J.A. The parley was attended by over 3,000 delegates representing 800,000 members in 7,000 Jewish organizations in this city. The parley heard Dr. Frank Kingdon, lecturer and columnist who Just returned from a trip to Israel, and Joseph Zerubavel, member of the Jewish Agency executive. Israeli President Weizmann sent the conference a message.
