An Israeli spokesman today stated that there seemed to be “no sense” in talking of an armistice with Transjordan if “nothing is being done” against British moves in the Aqaba area.
The spokesman was canting on a statement by Christopher Mayhew, British Foreign Under-Secretary, in Commons yesterday to the effect that Britain did not interpret the U.H. resolution calling for a truce in Palestine to forbid Britain to change the disposition of her troops in the Middle East. Taking “serious exception” to Mayhew’s remarks, the Israeli spokesman declared that Israel believed that moves strengthening British forces in the Negev area were contrary to the U.N. resolution.
