Sixty-three thousand Jews have poured into during the first quarter of 1949 with the help of the Joint Distribution Com it was reported today by Edward M.M. Warburg, J.D.C. chairman. He spoke before some 300 Jewish community leaders from six states of the J.D.C, Middle Atlantic Region who were attending the group’s annual meeting. Warburg disclosed that the phenomenal rate of Jewish immigration to the Holy Land” had resulted in the arrival this far this year of more than twice the number of persons originally anticipated.
In addition to the assistance needed by Jews in North Africa, Moses A, Leavitt J.D.C. executive vice-chairman, listed three other basic tasks of the J.D.C. this year: 1. To aid nearly 200,000 persons hoping to emigrate to Israel and other lands; 2. To provide funds to enable at least 100,000 Jews become self-supporting in Europe; 3. To continue relief and welfare programs covering child care, religious and medical needs. Bernard Alexander of Trenton, N.J., was re-elected chairman of the Middle Atlantic Region.
