Negotiations are under way for an exchange of diplomatic representatives between Israel and Turkey, which last week extended recognition to the Jewish state, it was learned here today. It is understood that the Turkish Government has indicated a willingness to send its representatives to Tel Aviv this month.
Meanwhile, the announcement of the extension of diplomatic status by the Turkish Government, which burst on an unsuspecting public, is being welcomed in all quarters here. Turkish political circles and the Turkish press have joined the Jewish community in hailing the move. The press greeted recognition as a step in the direction of strengthening relations between the two nations and as an aid to Turkey in the role on the U.N. Palestine Conciliation Commission. The Jewish community celebrated the occasion by holding special thanksgiving services in all synagogues last Saturday.
In response to queries in the press and elsewhere as to the reasons for the threat migration of Turkish Jews to Israel, Henri Soriano, president of the Jewish community here, told newsmen that economic conditions were chiefly responsible for this mass movement. He pointed out that most of the emigrants were young men and women who desired to build a future for themselves in the new state.
