C.R. Swart, South African Minister of Justice, yesterday apologized in Parliament for having erroneously linked members of the Board of Deputies, and specifically S.M. Kuper, chairman of the Board, with Communists.
Swart “blamed an error on the part of the police authorities for his earlier statements about the Board and Kuper. Asserting that the police had mistaken Kuper for another man named Cooper, Swart said he wished to tales the opportunity to apologize for any inconvenience caused him.
Early last month, answering Swart’s attack on the Board and on himself, Euper outlined the Board’s position vis-a-vis party politics in which the organization does not participate–in contrast to the right sad duty of every individual Jew in the community and member of the Board to participate in party politics. When he completed his defense of the right of Jews as individuals to participate in politics, Kuper revealed that the “Cooper” involved in the incident referred to by Swart was not he.
