A split has occurred in the Jewish community here following a sharp difference of opinion between representatives of the Orthodox and Liberal religious groups within the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
The conflict arose over a resolution which would have empowered the president of the hoard to appoint marriage registrars for Literal Synagogues, with the cooperation of the authorities of such congregations. The motion was defeated on the grounds that the Board of Deputies charter only recognizes Orthodox Judaism and that there fore marriage registrars may he appointed only by ecclesiastical authorities–the chief Rabbi and the Beth Din.
The Liberals on the Board walked out of the meeting immediately after the vote, and it is believed that they are planning to leave the organization and establish a separate body of their own. The issue is still not clearly crystallized and this Liberals are expected to abstain in the forthcoming elections for members of the Board.
A.F. Brotman, secretary of the Board of Deputies, left here today for New York to consult with leaders of Jewish organizations in the United States on questions dealing with the U.N. Human Rights Commission.
