Two thousand Austrian and foreign Jews joined yesterday in celebrating Israel’s first Independence Day by a mass pilgrimage to the grave of Theodor Herzl, founder of the modern Zionist movement. Later they assembled in the Konzerthaus to hear addresses by representatives of the Israeli Government.

Special meetings were held in the Jewish displaced persons camps throughout the country to mark the occasion. The theme of most speeches was the desire of the DP’s to celebrate the next anniversary of the state’s establishment in Israel.
