The Hew York City public school system’s Board of Superintendents announced yesterday that it has decided to retain Charles Dickens’ novel, “Oliver Twist,” on the approved list of reading material for high school students. The British-produced movie, based on the book which depicts a Jewish villain named Fagin, has been banned in several European countries.
The decision was based on a unanimous recommendation submitted to the board by a seven-member reading committee. Several members of the committee were Jewish; it was explained by Dr. William Jansen, Superintendent of Schools.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
