Two Arabs were killed today when a party of Arabs who infiltrated Israeli lines approached the Neveh Ilan settlement, five miles north of Jerusalem. The colony’s look-out, who challenged a suspicious-looking group approaching the settlement, opened fire after the group refused to heed a command to halt. Two were killed and the rest fled.
This is only one instance in a series of widespread Arab attempts to infiltrate Israel via the Jerusalem area. Not all of the Arabs are refugees and Israeli border patrols are having considerable difficulty with the infiltrees, who are also attempting to cross the new state’s frontiers from neighboring Arab countries. Although no exact count of the number of Arabs who have surreptitiously entered Israel exists, many abandoned Arab villages have been filled by their former inhabitants.
