The administration of the City College of New York was accused by the Teachers Union of practicing racial discrimination in the hiring and firing of faculty members. The union pointed out that 50 teachers hired immediately after the war have come up for permanent appointment. Of these, 96 percent of the white, non-Jewish, probationary teachers were awarded permanent appointment as compared to 52 percent in the case of the Jews.
