Israeli Chief Rabbi Dr. Isaac Halevi Herzog sailed from here today aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam en route home after completing a seven-week speaking tour throughout the United States in behalf of the current campaign of the United Jewish Appeal.
At a farewell reception tendered him last night by the Mizrachi Organization of America, Dr. Herzog emphasized that “a great responsibility now devolves on all religious organizations to intensify their efforts to make the influence of Torah felt in all avenues of Jewish life.” Prior to his departure, Dr. Herzog paid a visit to the Lubavitcher Rebbe at the latter’s Brooklyn residence, where he was apprised of the educational programs conducted in this country under the auspices of the Lubavitcher Hassidic movement.
In a statement released through the United Jewish Appeal on the eve of his sailing, the Israeli Chief Rabbi declared: “My visits to the Jewish communities in the U.S. have given me fresh evidence that American Jewry can make a great contribution to the welfare and advancement of its brethren overseas, not only in the form of funds, but in a spiritual sense. American Jewry comprises the largest body of Jews in the world. Together with the new state of Israel, with which American Jews have spiritual and cultural ties, I am confident that they will carry out to its ultimate successful conclusion our Joint endeavor to provide a home and a haven for the hundreds of thousands of Jews in Europe and North Africa who wish to come to the Jewish state.”
