New customs regulations went into effect in Israel today with levies on food gift parcels sharply reduced from 30 percent of their value to a nominal figure of 25 cents for each 4.4. pounds, it was announced by Gideon Strauss, Israeli Consul in New York in charge of commercial affairs. Immigrants will henceforth be exempted from paying luxury taxes on their personal effects and equipment, Mr. Strauss revealed. Luxury taxes will be levied, however, on all electrical appliances.
The Ministry of Defense in Israel is collecting all available biographical material, letters, literary work and photographs of soldiers who died in Israel’s defense, it was announced by Arthur Lourie, Israeli Consul General. All records will be preserved in a Golden Book to be published soon, and in a memorial to be built in tribute to those who fell in the fighting last year. Parents, relatives and friends have been requested by the Israeli Government to submit such material to the Ministry of Defense.
