Secretary of State Dean Acheson today urged both Israelis and Arabs to reach a speedy solution to outstanding problems in the Palestine dispute. His remarks coincided with the reopening of discussions before the U.N. Palestine Conciliation Commission at Lausanne.
Mr. Acheson said that the U.S. is ready to give “firm and impartial assistance” to Jews and Arabs in reaching a peaceful settlement and that the new U.S. member of the Commission, Paul A. Porter, would work to this end.
Inasmuch as the “military phases of the Palestine question are now at an end,” Mr. Acheson said he was convinced that “no issue (remained) which is not susceptible of solution by peaceful means.” He added that both sides now should “extend their exchange of views to all problems” so as ” to make possible a simultaneous and balanced approach to the closely-related problems of territorial settlement and disposition of the refugees from the hostilities.”
