The members of the Hapoel Hamizrachi of Israel have voted against a merger with the Histadrut, it was announced here today after a tabulation of the 18,000 ballots cast yesterday in a national election. There are 22,000 members in the organization.
Although there were four slates entered in the election, the major issues were affiliation with the Histadrut, or affiliation with the Mizrachi organization. The slate headed by Immigration and Health Minister Moshe Shapira, which opposed amalgamation with the labor federation, received more than 50 percent of the votes.
Rabbi Dr. Bernard Bergman, editor and publisher of the Jewish Morning Journal of New York, and newly-elected president of the Hapoel Hamizrachi of America, arrived here today. He told newsmen that he will attempt to bring about an agreement between the religious laborites and the Mizrachi, particularly in the United States and Europe.
