South Indian Jews Association Votes to Affiliate with World Jewish Congress

The South Indian Jews Association, the third largest Jewish community in India, has voted to affiliate with the World Jewish Congress, it was announced here today by Dr. I. Schwarzbart, head organization department of the Congress.

The Association, which is headed by the Jewish Community of Cochin, represents some 1,500 Jews. In the public schools of one town in its district — Parur, in the state of Travancore — Jewish children receive Hebrew instruction. The Jews of Coohin and other communities in the South Indian Jews Association are descendents of some 10,000 Jews who landed on the southern shores of India over 2,000 years ago.
