More than 30,000 housing units under construction in Israel will be completed by the end of this year only if American Jewry provides the necessary funds, Judge Morris Rothenberg, acting chairman of the United Palestine Appeal, announced today in his quarterly report to the U.P.A. board of directors.
He emphasized, despite new units now being built, Israel will still be faced with a shortage of about 18,000 units at the end of the year leaving about 54,000 immigrants homeless.
Judge Rothenberg also reported that the Jewish Agency, one of U.P.A.’s constituent organizations, had incurred a deficit of nearly $20,000,000 for its program of immigration and resettlement in the first six months of the year.
