The mixed Israel-Transjordan Armistice Commission today concluded the case of the Arab villagers of El Gharbieh whom the Israelis do not wish to readmit to the village, which is within Israel-held territory. It was agreed that both the Jewish and the Arab delegation would approach their respective governments to recommend that a meeting be held of representatives of each nation for direct, two-party negotiations on the future of 1,200 Arab refugees.
In the case of Wadi Fukin, where a similar situation exists, both parties agreed to a postponement of the case pending an attempt by the U.N. chairman to arrive at a solution with the two governments involved. He said he favored Israel’s handing over the village to Transjordan with the latter paying adequate compensation, since the Jews are reluctant to readmit the Arab refugees to Wadi Fukin.
