Well informed circles here today confirmed that Alberto Gonzales Fernandez has resigned from his post as United Nations representative to Jerusalem, but termed as “completely unfounded” a report from Israel that U.N. Secretary General Trygve Lie has reconsidered his decision to appoint a U.N. commissioner for Jerusalem and that the post will be left vacant.

The truth is that the U.N. secretariat is now considering successors to Fernandez, the same sources told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. Fernandez was to depart last week from New York for Jerusalem to assume his post, but announced that he will not leave the United States because of his wife’s illness.

Israel threw its support today behind an Australian resolution that called for the establishment of a conciliation committee to seek a Balkan settlement. Participating in the discussion of the Greek question in the Political Committee of the U.N. here, Aubrey S. Eban, head of the Israel delegation, told the Committee members that the Jewish state would support the Australian resolution.

The Australian resolution would set up a committee composed of the President of the Assembly, the Secretary-General and the chairman and vice-chairmen of the Political Committee to continue the efforts of a similar group appointed last year to bring about an agreement among Greece, Albania, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. The Committee, according to the resolution, would report back to the Political Committee by October 31.

In the vote of the General Assembly today in which the China issue was added to the agenda, Israel was one of five nations which abstained from casting a ballot. The other abstains were: ‘Afghanistan, Haiti, Syria and Yemen.
