A resolution urging the U.S. Government “to give friendly consideration and support to the state of Israel in its just territorial claims in the execution of a final peace plan for the Middle East” was adopted here today at the 60th convention of the American Federation of labor.
The convention reaffirmed its “solidarity with the Jewish people” and hailed Israel on its election this year as a member of the United Nations. It emphasized that “Israel rightfully enjoys this position as an equal among the family of freedom loving, democratic peoples.”
The resolution commended President Truman “for his high moral stand in support of the fledging state of Israel.” It reaffirmed the long-standing record of friendship of the American Federation of Labor with the Histadrut and pledged “continued aid on the part of the A.F. of L. in the vital efforts to develop the young democratic Jewish state as a stronghold of freedom and as a haven for the hundreds of thousands of homeless Jews who still await the opportunity to enter their homeland.”
The convention endorsed the general aims and activities of the American Trade Union Council of the National Committee for Labor Israel, which raises funds in the United States for the Histadrut. Earlier, speaking for adoption of the resolution, Israel Feinberg, vice-president of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union who recently returned from Israel, voiced his enthusiasm over the “fundamental democracy” existing in the Jewish state.
