Poland is prepared to change her position on the internationalization of Jerusalem — for which it voted at the 1947 General Assembly — Polish consul-general Prof. Olgierd Gorka today told a press conference here.
Prof. Gorka said that Poland favors any “practicable, acceptable solution” of the problem. Although Poland favored internationalization of Jerusalem at the earlier U.N. session, “affairs in the Holy City have greatly changed since the passage of the original partition resolution in Nov., 1947.”
The consul-general, who just returned from a trip to his native land, asserted that the Polish Government understands Israel’s desire to absorb Polish Jewry and therefore his government has agreed to permit the emigration of Israel-bound Jews effective as of Oct. 1. It has also allowed them sufficient time between the receipt of their passports and the time they must leave the country in order to permit them to put their affairs in order, he said, adding that the Polish Government is permitting the emigrants to take tools and machinery with them in order to facilitate their absorption in their new land. “I hope this arrangement will contribute much to the cordial relations between Israel and Poland,” he declared.
Prof. Gorka insisted that “five years after the establishment of the new Poland it can definitely be stated that anti-Semitism in Poland has received a mortal blow.” He also said that his country “considers the Jews a creative element and is interested in their economic and social rehabilitation.”
