ISTANBUL (Nov. 20)
The Jewish community of Istanbul has been informed by Dr. Fahrettin Kerim Gokay, newly-appointed mayor of this city, that municipal authorities are ready to consider any request emanating from the Istanbul Jewish community, it was reported here. This information was conveyed to the Jews here through the office of the Istanbul Chief Rabbinate.
For the first time in the history of Turkish Jewry, a newspaper devoted to Jewish news printed in Turkish has begun to appear here. Jewish newspapers were previously published in Ladino, which is spoken by Sephardic Jews and which has been steadily declining in this country. The new paper, “Turkiyenin Sesi,” is published weekly.
