Leaders of the Zionist movement today honored Dr. Simon Bernstein, Hebrew scholar and writer, at a luncheon tendered him by the Jewish Agency on the occasion of Dr. Bernstein’s retirement after “37 years of Zionist civil service.” Speakers included Berl Locker, Agency executive chairman; Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the Agency’s American section; Louis Lipsky, chairman of the American Zionist Council; Daniel Frisch, president of the Zionist Organization of America, and other Zionist leaders.
After joining the Zionist movement in 1912, Dr. Bernstein served in many top Zionist posts. He was director of the Palestine bureau of the Agency since 1922 and supervised the entry of thousands of Jewish refugees to Palestine during World War II. Dr. Bernstein plans to pursue his studies in medieval Hebrew poetry, a field in which he is a recognized authority.
