The United States could learn much from the young state of Israel in the field of social welfare, Oscar Ewing, U.S. Federal Security Administrator, declared at a press conference here last night prior to his departure today. Mr Ewing spent three days touring the Jewish state.

Speaking of his experiences in the new state, Mr Ewing said that “all Americans can be proud” of the record established by those Americans who contributed to the upbuilding of Israel. He pointed out there is a “danger” that support of the United Jewish Appeal will drop off “now that the dramatic impact of outright warfare is gone.”

“I wish that those Americans who are lagging in their support of the United Jewish Appeal could see what is happening in Israel today,” he continued. “It is even more dramatic than the battles of the past. I should think that any American would be proud to help make Israel a lasting success”.

The Federal Security Administrator also revealed that when he returns to the U.S. he will ask the U.S. Commissioner of Education to extend whatever aid the Israel Government has requested in the field of education. He added that “it may well turn out from this exchange of educational experience American educators will themselves acquire new ideas”.

Referring to the U.N. plan to internationalize Jerusalem, he said that “the part played by America in the establishment of Israel should give assurance that Israel’s rightful claims will be considered with understanding and friendship in the United States.”
