Israel to Erect Sugar Factory with Aid of U.S. Loan; Turkey Buys Refrigerators

A sum of $600,000 from the $100,000,000 Export-Import Bank loan to Israel has been allocated for the purchase of machinery and other equipment for the erection of a sugar refining factory in the southern part of the Jewish state, it was reported today. Large tracts of land in the immediate vicinity of the factory site will be used for the growing of sugar beets.

Turkey has placed its first order for Israel-made Philce refrigerators, which are scheduled to be produced in a factory now under construction here, it was learned today. A consignment of 250 refrigerators has been promised to Turkey for delivery this spring.

“Operation Afforestation,” involving hundreds of thousands of dunams of land and providing employment for many new immigrants, began this week in Galilee. The plan provides for the planting of 500,000 trees in Eastern Galilee and 116,000 in Western Galilee. Between 5,000,000 and 6,000,000 seedlings are now being raised in nurseries throughout Israel and will be ready for planting next year.
