Activities in Hungary of the Joint Distribution Committee are continuing despite the arrest and deportation of its director, Israel Jacobson, it was announced here today by Moses Beckelman, J.D.C. European vice-chairman.
“Because the needs are so great,” Mr. Beckelman said, “the J.D.C. helps more Jewish people in Hungary than in any one of 25 countries in the world where it operates.” At present J.D.C. relief work in Hungary is directed by Aaron Berkowitz, with the aim of first assisting hard-core cases, and second, “economically displaced” persons, such as small merchants who have lost their livelihood because of nationalization. The second task is being met by the formation of 50 work cooperatives which employ 2,000 breadwinners.
