The completion of 50 years’ service as a religious counsellor at Columbia University by Rabbi Isidor Hoffman was hailed here last night at ceremonies attended by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, president of Columbia. Gen. Eisenhower gave what he termed a “solidier’s salute” to Rabbi Hoffman. At the same time, the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Seixas Society, Jewish fraternity organization at Columbia, was marked.
In connection with the ceremonies, an exhibition of docoments and private papers relating to Gershon Mendes Seixas, a trustee of Columbia College for 40 years in the latter part of the 18th century, was opened at the University. Mr. Seixas was one of the incorporators of the college. The Seixas Society, which was named for him, was formed following a suggestion by the late Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Cardozo, a descendant of Seixas.
