Declaring that the treatment of Jews in some Moslem countries had continued to worsen, the World Jewish Congress this week-end asked that the United Nations Economic and Social Council reiterate its last year’s appeal to the governments involved to safeguard the fundamental human rights, of individals and groups.
Dr. Maurice L. Perlzweig, of the W.J.C., appearing before the Council’s Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations, urged that the Council give effect to a resolution it passed a year ago which expressed the hope that governments and authorities concerned would exert efforts “to safeguard the fundamental human rights of individuals and groups of different faiths.”
At the same Committee session, Bernard Bernstein, of the Coordinating Board of Jewish Organizations, suggested that the Economic and Social Council establish fact-finding commissions to make surveys on the situation of human rights in all parts of the world. Mr. Bernstein said that his organization’s proposal arose from the fact that several years would necessarily elapse before the international covenant on human rights would be in effect and that the existing foundations of human rights must be safeguarded during this period.
