The acceptance by Israel citizens of gifts in the form of automobiles will henceforth be conditional upon obtaining a special license from the Foreign Currency Division of the Finance Ministry, it was announced here today. The announcement stressed that the move was made to prevent illegal dealings in foreign currency to the detriment of the Israel pound.
Dr. Daniel Weiser, a high Treasury official, revealed that there are 300,000 applications on file for permission to import automobiles. He said that the applications will be scrutinized carefully and that attempts to evade the currency regulations will be punished severely. He warned Israelis that if they purchase cars with foreign license plates they may lose their investments since the government may seize the vehicles.
